A senior police officer has been arrested in Assam for posting objectionable remarks against a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) on his Facebook account

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Anjan Bora of the Assam Police Service was arrested on Saturday for his controversial Facebook post against a woman BJP MLA.

He was taken into custody by the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) following departmental and criminal proceedings against him. Earlier, the BJP had filed a case against him demanding action.

At the time of his arrest, Bora was posted as deputy commandant of a police battalion in Assam's Karbi Anglong district.

On Facebook, he had written that the woman MLA was involved in a prostitution racket that he said was being run from her office chamber in the State secretariat in Guwahati.

Bora defended his Facebook post, saying it was based on information provided by a former Rashtriya Swayam Sewak (RSS) leader.

Assam's Director General of Police (DGP) Mukesh Sahay said the law would take its own course in the matter.

He said that any act, unbecoming of a government servant, amounts to violation of the conduct rules.

Bora has since been granted bail after furnishing a bond of Rs.10, 000.
