Assamese celebrate festival of Magh Bihu

People in Assam are celebrating the festival of Magh Bihu also called Bhugali Bihu today, despite ongoing militant-related violence and the army operation "ALL OUT" against the NDFB(s).

On the occasion, the people, afer taking a bath early in the morning lit the MEJI (tall stractures made of bamboo and straw) and prayed to the Fire God for good health.

On the occasion, people visit their near and dear ones as Bihu guests and invite people over for meals.

Women folk prepare several dishes to serve the guests.

Popular eatables served during Bihu include Pitha (rice cake), Tilor Laru, Narikol Laru, Doi, Handoh and Tel Pitha. These items are made from rice, coconut and sesame seeds etc.

 

This harvest festival is all about feasting, inviting near and dear one as their guests to the dining table.

Traditionally, celebrating Bihu is a passionate exercise both in the urban and rural areas of the north east.
