Assamese jewellery designer promotes traditional ornaments

Twenty five-year-old Utpal Bania is a successful jewellery designer from Nagaon, Assam, who gave up his career as an aeronautical engineer to design traditional Assamese jewellery.

Now, he has his own showroom under the name "Doog Doogi" in Guwahati, where, he designs jewellery as per the requirements of his clients. Besides, he also markets his jewellery on the internet, social media and his web page.

Recently, he opened a showroom in Nagaon and employs around 20 people.

Today, he has customers not only from different parts of India, but from across the world.

"There are so many unemployed youth. We should teach them about jewellery designing so that it can create employment in the future," said Bania.

 

Utpal has also written a small book on traditional Assamese ornaments in English and Assamese.

He also makes use of conventional Assamese jewellery designs to create contemporary designs.

Some of his ornaments designs are Junbir, Doogdoogi, Maduli, Satsori, Lokapara, Galpata, Maangtika, Dholbiri and Thuriya.

"I use to organized workshop on Jewelry in many places. Recently, I organized at Srimanta Shankar and I taught them. I have organized at DIC also where I gave them skill development knowledge," said Bania.

His success is a source of inspiration for many youth in the region.
