At least 20 injured as trains collide north of New York after derailment

Two trains collided after one of them derailed during the Friday evening rush hour in Fairfield, the U.S. state of Connecticut, injuring at least 20 people, local authorities said.

The Fairfield police estimated that 20 to 25 people were injured in the accident, but no fatalities had been reported so far, media reports here said.

An New York-bound train from New Haven derailed at around 6 p.m. local time just out of the rail station in Fairfield, Connecticut, and then hit a westbound train on an adjacent track.

As images by News 12 Connecticut TV station showed, emergency workers have arrived at the scene of the accident.

 

The collision has disrupted the Metro-North railroad service between South Norwalk and New Haven, according to a service alert by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
