At least three thousand athletes and Boston Marathon bombing victims reclaimed the Boston Marathon victory by completing the final mile of Boston Marathon.

The one mile run began at Kenmore Square and ended at the finish line as participants celebrated their triumph, Fox News reports.

Spokeswoman for the event OneRun, Kathleen McGonagle said that thousands of athletes joined the league with the victims and gathered in light rain to compete for the Marathon to honour victims and emergency workers and allow runners to reclaim the finish line.

According to the report, the runners did not get the chance to finish the marathon on April 15 due to explosions near the finish line that killed three people and injured over 260 others.

McGonagle further said that the event has been organized for the runners who did not get the chance to finish the marathon, adding that this event will give them the opportunity to experience the final mile that was taken away from them.

The report said that some corporate sponsors donated funds for OneRun and covered its operating cost although the event was not a fundraiser, adding that the leftover funds will be sent to a charity set up to benefit bombing victims.

The event ended with the National Anthem sung by the choir from St. Ann Parish, where an eight-year-old victim Martin Richard's family worshipped, the report added.
