With the recent water sight inspection conducted in Rio de Janeiro, it looks like athletes will be swimming in the swamp of garbage at the 2016 Olympics.
When comprehensive testing of the water at several Olympic sites was conducted, it was reportedly found that the sites were contaminated with alarmingly high levels of viruses and bacteria from human sewage, reported People magazine.
Commenting on the reports, marine biologists John Griffith said that these water site were only raw sewage nothing else.
Though the medical director of the International Olympic Committee has maintained that everything is proceeding as planned and that all the venues will be safe for competition, it is unclear how that's going to happen since most of Brazil's sewage is not treated and open-air ditches carrying waste run into streams and rivers connected to the Olympic sites.
Claiming that his team has lost training days after falling sick, Coach of Austria's sailing team Ivan Bulaja said that by far this was the worst water quality they had ever seen.
