Australia captain Steve Smith has said that his side will be banking on the experience gained during the Indian Premier League to win their maiden World T20 title.

Australia head into the T20 format's pinnacle event in India after winning the three-match series 2-1 against South Africa and will take on New Zealand in their opening match on Friday.

"We know what to expect from the conditions over here, a lot of us have played here before, either in IPL or against India so we know what to expect and we're ready for the challenge," Smith told reporters while addressing a press conference in Kolkata.

The 26-year-old admitted that Australia have traditionally not fared well in the shortest format of the game but insisted that his 15-man squad have the capability to bring home their maiden title.

"Traditionally we haven't done as well as we would have liked in this format of the game. This is a tournament that has eluded us so we are here to try and win it," Smith added.

Australia, which suffered a 3-0 defeat against India in the home series, will also play the hosts on March 27.
