Police rescued a 10-year-old child on Sunday who was swept away by the torrential flow of the River Assi Ganga in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi District.
The child was bathing in the river with his three friends, when there was a sudden increase in the water level due to rain. While three children managed to escape, one child was carried away by the swirling waters for around 100 metres.
Some women working nearby spotted the child stuck between the rocks and informed the police, who, with the help of fire workers, successfully rescued the child.
"He was bathing in Assi Ganga when he was suddenly swept away. After being swept away, he was stuck here in the middle and then he was rescued by the police with the help of fire service and people," said police official, J.P. Upreti.
Monsoon rains are crucial for farm-dependent India, but scores of people die every year in landslides and floods caused by heavy downpours.
Heavy rains in June last year caused rivers and lakes to burst their banks, killing almost 6,000 people in Uttarakhand.
