India produced an all-round performance on Friday to defeat Zimbabwe by 54 runs in the first Twenty20 international of the two-match series at Harare, thanks to a dominating show from spin duo of Axar Patel and Harbhajan Singh.
Opting to bat first, India posted a challenging 179-run target for the hosts on the back of couple of thirties from captain Ajinkya Rahane (33), Murali Vijay (34) and Robin Uthappa (39 not out).
In reply, although Zimbabwe got off to a promising start, T20 debutant Axar and Harbhajan flexed their bowling muscles to dismantle the threat from the opposition.
While Axar returned figures of 3-17, Harbhajan provided substantial support by scalping two wickets and restrict Zimbabwe to 124-7 in their allotted 20 overs.
Hamilton Mazakadza was the top scorer for Zimbabwe, with 28 runs off 24 deliveries.
India will next meet Zimbabwe in the second and final T20 match at the same venue on Sunday.
