Bangladesh today observed National Mourning Day to mark the 41st death anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The country observes August 15 every year as National Mourning Day and it is also declared a public holiday.

On this day in 1975, Rahman along most of his family members were killed by a section of disgruntled and ambitious army personnel.

His daughters Sheikh Hasina, who is now the Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Sheikh Rehana escaped the killing as they were abroad.

Reports suggest that national flags have been lowered to half-mast at all government, semi-government and autonomous bodies, educational institutions, private buildings and Bangladesh missions abroad.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Hasina paid homage by placing wreaths at the portrait of the great leader in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum earlier today, reports the Daily Star.
