Queens Park Rangers (QPR) midfielder Joey Barton has reportedly apologised on Twitter for making sexist comments after he compared the EU elections to choosing between 'four ugly girls'.

Barton was accused of making sexist comments after he compared last week's European Parliament and local elections to choosing between ugly girls, saying that if he is somewhere and there were four really ugly girls, he is thinking that she is not the worst and that is all UKIP are.

According to the Independent, Barton had used the 'ugly girl' comparison on TV as he and former Mirror editor Piers Morgan were expected to continue their Twitter spat live on air but instead the QPR footballer was accused of sexism by an audience member on BBC Question on Thursday.

Newly elected North West England UKIP MEP Louise Bours quickly hit back at Barton's analogy saying that it was an offensive thing to say, before she accused the English man of being a 'typical' footballer with brains in his feet.

Barton first apologised on the show for his comment, saying that it was a case of nerves, then he later took to Twitter to say sorry for the 'ill conceived metaphor'.
