The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday termed the death of the two girls in Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh as suicide, adding that there was no evidence of murder or sexual assault in the case.
"Based on around 40 scientific reports, the CBI has concluded that the two minor girls in the Badaun case had not been sexually assaulted and murdered, as had been alleged in the FIR. Investigations by the CBI have concluded that it is a case of suicide," CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad told the media.
The incident, in which two Dalit teenagers were found hanging from a mango tree in their village on May 28, had shocked the nation.
The girls had gone to relieve themselves in nearby fields on the night of the incident. When they didn't return, the families alerted the police but they refused to follow up.
