A Dhaka court on Monday ordered Bangladesh fast bowler Shahadat Hossain and his wife to face trial for physically torturing an 11-year-old maid.

Hossain and his wife face a maximum 14 years imprisonment in addition to financial penalties if they are found guilty of the charges.

Reflecting on the case, prosecutor Ali Asgar Swapan said that the judge has indicted them for grievously hurting the maid and formally ordered their trial, the Dawn reported.

However, both Hossain and his wife continue to plead their innocence.

In September, the young girl had filed a case before the local police in which she accused the couple of torturing her. The girl was found injured and crying on a street in Dhaka.

Hossain, who has played 51 ODIs for Bangladesh, and his wife went into hiding after police raided their house in September and the cricketer handed himself into police a month later after his wife was arrested.

He was also suspended from the national team by the Bangladesh Cricket Board over the allegations.
