Bangladesh cricketer Shahadat Hossain and his wife have been charged with physically torturing an 11-year-old maid, said investigators.
Hossain and his wife face a maximum 14 years imprisonment in addition to financial penalties if they are found guilty of the charges, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
In September, the girl had filed a case before the local police in which she accused the couple of torturing her. The girl was found injured and crying on a street in Dhaka.
Hossain and his wife will be presented before a court on January 12 for a hearing on whether to take the case to trial, police officer Jahangir Hossain said.
The pace bowler, who absconded amidst accusations, was subsequently arrested before he was granted bail until March 31.
He was also suspended from the national team by the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
