The Bangladesh intelligence officials mistaken as robbers were assaulted by Rahimpur bordering villagers of Boxanagar in Tripura's Sepahijal district, but were later rescued and sent back by the Indian security personnel.
"The intelligence officials were apprehend by local villagers while chasing smugglers," said a senior Border Security Force (BSF) official.
"The officials had crossed into the Indian Territory of Tripura, but were later sent back," he added.
According to reports, four district-level intelligence officials of Bangladesh had entered a house, situated 15 metres inside India from the demarcating border pillar.
Seeing the unknown armed persons, mistaken as dacoits, the family members raised an alarm to which other villagers gathered there and apprehended the officials and attacked them.

The officials were badly injured in the mob attack. The BSF and police personnel later rescued them from the villagers.
The rescued persons, who were following the interrogation identified as Bangladesh intelligence officials, had entered the Indian Territory by mistake in search of stocked contraband meant for smuggling.
They were later taken to a Baksanagar health centre and after treatment handed over to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) as a good gesture.
