The Congress party on Tuesday termed the Barabanki incident, where a woman anganwadi worker was allegedly set on fire by two policemen, as 'dreadful' and added that it reflects the 'gunda raaj' in Uttar Pradesh.
"All these incidents show that there is 'gunda raaj' in Uttar Pradesh. The police is committing atrocities against innocent people. There can be nothing more dreadful and shameful than a woman being misbehaved with in a police station and later being burnt alive," Congress spokesperson Shobha Oza told ANI.
Meanwhile, the Akhilesh Yadav-led Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
The victim's son had earlier demanded justice for his mother, saying she would only rest in peace when the guilty are punished.
According to reports, the woman had gone to the police station to free her husband, who had been picked up for questioning. When she refused to bribe the policemen in order to release her husband, she was set ablaze.
