Delhi's Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi on Sunday assertively defended himself and his force on the issue of maintaining law and order in the national capital, and appeared to counter Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, when he said that the existing city policing system was not in the business of indulging in 'knee-jerk reactions'.
Confirming that tentatively he would be meeting Kejriwal at 4 p.m. on Monday, Bassi said, "The present system of policing in Delhi was not a 'knee-jerk reaction' of the government. When they introduced the Police Commissionerate in Delhi, in later years, it was realized that the policing system was not effective at all, and needs to be reviewed."
"Justice G.D. Khosla examined numerous issues and found out that the policing which was operational under the Act of 1861, the Indian Police Act that failed to manage the national capital's law and order situation. It lacked unity of command, professionalism, had divided responsibility," he added.

Kejriwal yesterday attacked Prime Minister Modi over the brutal Anand Parbat stabbing of a 19-year-old girl, and said the law and order situation in the national capital has deteriorated drastically in the recent past.

"Delhi Police is under the Centre. The Prime Minister should either act or transfer Delhi Police's command to the Delhi Government," Kejriwal had said.
