The Patiala District Court on Thursday remanded former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh's assassin and Khalistan Tiger Force commander Jagtar Singh Tara to three days in police custody.

"Jagtar Singh Tara was presented before the court. The police requested for an extension in the remand period by nine days and alleged that during interrogation, Tara had disclosed that he had hidden explosives on the Indo-Nepal border. The police asked for an increase in remand in order to recover the explosives," advocate for the accused Baljinder Sodhi told the media.

"I strongly opposed it because he had already been in police custody for five days and has been interrogated. The next day of the hearing has been finalised for January 25," he added.

Earlier this month, Thai authorities, acting on a tip-off from the Punjab Police, reportedly arrested Tara from the house of a member of Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) in Bangkok.

Tara is accused of planning the suicide attack on Beant Singh in 1995 in Chandigarh, an act of terror that resulted in the death of 18 people.

The Khalistan Tiger Force commander and his accomplices Paramjit Singh Bheora, Jagtar Singh Hawara and Dev Singh were arrested after the incident but escaped from the high security Burail Jail in Chandigarh.

According to reports, Tara was living in Thailand under a Pakistani passport.
