Ravneet Singh Bittu, grandson of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh on Tuesday congratulated the Punjab police and the country's intelligence agencies for providing information to the Thai authorities leading to the arrest of his grandfather's assassin Jagtar Singh Tara, demanding he be awarded the death penalty.
"I would like congratulate Punjab police and our country's intelligence. There are certain organizations that fund these people. There should be a fast court for this case, and a death penalty should be given," he told ANI here.
"We need to send a message that we are not going to tolerate these types of activities. No religion teaches us to kill someone. Judgement should be pronounced soon and Jagtar Singh should be given capital punishment," he added.
According to reports, the Thai authorities, acting on a tip-off from the Punjab Police, arrested Tara from the house of a member of Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence (ISI).
Tara is accused of planning the suicide attack on Beant Singh in 1995 in Chandigarh, an act of terror that resulted in the death of 18 people.
The Khalistan Tiger Force commander and his accomplices Paramjit Singh Bheora, Jagtar Singh Hawara and Dev Singh were arrested after the incident but escaped from the high security Burail Jail in Chandigarh.
According to reports, Tara was living in Thailand under a Pakistani passport.
