Benedict Cumberbatch is set to play the title role in Marvel's upcoming film 'Doctor Strange.'
Though the 38-year-old 'Sherlock' star had always been in consideration for the part, his schedule and theater commitments were always a conflict. However, after Joaquin Phoenix dropped out, Cumberbatch has been confirmed for the role, the Hollywood Reporter reported.
Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, 'Doctor Strange' had first made his appearance in the Marvel Universe more than 50 years ago.
The project, which would be helmed by Scott Derrickson and has been slated for release on July 8, 2016, focuses on a former neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats.
