A bill requiring porn actors to wear condoms in all adult films produced in California barely cleared the state Assembly after a tight vote.

The bill, AB1576 by Assemblyman Isadore Hall (D-Compton), advanced to the Senate after a 41-12 vote - the minimum number of votes needed, the New York Daily News reported.

Hall said that he authored the bill to bring the same workplace safety to the porn industry that is enforced in all other "legitimate businesses."

The bill - which would also require performers to be tested for sexually transmitted diseases at least 14 days before filming - follows a similar mandate that was approved by voters in Los Angeles County in 2012.

The bill later passed despite stiff opposition from the adult film industry.

Last year, officials said the number of permits to make porn films in Los Angeles County declined after the law requiring adult film actors to wear rubbers took effect.
