The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government for doing away with hindrances that made land acquisition difficult for purpose of industry.

"Wasting no opportunity to usher in development, governance and acchey din that it had promised, the government is putting extra effort to see to it that the people of the country do not suffer and infact today with the clearance of the Land Acquisition Act the government has cleared the barriers for the industry sector," BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra told ANI while reacting to the Union Cabinet approving the land acquisition amendment ordinance.

"Crores of rupees in fact could not be spent in India to bring in acchey din because of this act and today the government has successfully cleared this hindrance. We congratulate the government for this," he said.

Announcing the Cabinet's decision Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, the ordinance intends to make a fair balance between the interest of farmers and industry.

The new law which will come into effect from Thursday will see the owners of land acquired via laws exempted under the act being eligible for a similar compensation.

The ordinance is being brought as the government failed to amend as many as 13 central legislations to bring their rehabilitation and resettlement and compensation provisions at par with those of the new Land Acquisition Act for buying land across the country.

The Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, came into force on January 1, this year.
