The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress were on Wednesday unanimous in their condemnation of the West Bengal Government after a Christian missionary school in the state's Jalpaiguri district received threat letters demanding its shut down.

"It is a matter of great concern. The West Bengal Government should look into this with utmost seriousness and the Chief Minister should ensure that the minorities feel secure in the state. Whoever is involved in this, they should be punished," said Congress spokesperson Shobha Oza.

The BJP, meanwhile, stated that there is a law and order problem in West Bengal, unlike Maharashtra and Haryana, where those accused of attacking churches were nabbed soon.

"It is certainly a law and order problem. We have seen that certain incidents happened in Maharashtra and Haryana also, where BJP is ruling and within 48 hours, the culprits have been arrested and the law has taken its own course," said BJP spokesperson Siddhrath Nath Singh.

"Our government has shown its intent and action that law and order cannot be misused by anybody in the name of religion. Unfortunately in West Bengal, we are seeing that the nun gang-rape accused are roaming freely," he added.

The Jalpaiguri incident comes after an elderly nun was gang-raped by some intruders who broke into a convent school in Nadia town on March 14. It is also the latest in a series of attacks against Christian institutions across the country.
