Congress Party leader Manish Tewari today said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may have the highest number of seats in Delhi Assembly but they are still short of the right majority to form a government.
When asked to express his opinion on the speculation that the single largest party i.e. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will be asked to form a government in Delhi, Tewari said, "If that is the case then the BJP should have formed the government immediately after the polls. BJP has the highest number of seats in Delhi Assembly but they don't have majority to form the government."
He added, "The situation now is no different from what it was immediately after the Delhi Assembly elections results were announced. Why didn't BJP form a government then?"
Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung had on Thursday denied taking any decision on government formation in Delhi, as the capital continues to be under Governor's rule.
"I haven't taken any decision yet, haven't sent out any signal. There's a possibility of everything," said Jung.
Delhi has been under the President's rule since February 17 this year, after Arvind Kejriwal's resigned as the Chief Minister in protest against the Lieutenant Governor's refusal to allow the introduction of the 'Janlokpal bill' in the Assembly.
Earlier this month, the Supreme Court (SC) had asked the Centre to take a decision on holding the Delhi Assembly elections, following a petition filed by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) asking for the dissolution of the Assembly and fresh polls.
