Expressing concern over escalating prices of petrol and diesel in Madhya Pradesh, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Babulal Gaur has written to the state Finance and Commercial Tax Minister Jayant Malaiya, demanding a reduction in the Value-Added Tax (VAT) levied on the petroleum products.

Speaking to ANI here, Gaur said, "The VAT imposed on petrol and diesel in the state is the highest here compared to neighbouring states like Maharashtra, Delhi and Gujarat. This has resulted into a steep fall in the sale of petroleum products in the state and people and traders residing on the border districts are not purchasing petroleum products from the these petrol pumps. I request them to cut down VAT on petro products."

Gaur further appealed to the Finance Minister to respond quickly to his request considering public welfare.

The VAT on petrol and diesel in Madhya Pradesh is 39.75 per cent, Gujarat is 28.96 per cent, Chhattisgarh is 29.68 per cent, Rajasthan is 32.81 per cent and Uttar Pradesh is 31.17 per cent.
