The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday held the economic policies of the Congress-led UPA Government responsible for inflation, and said it is the worst failure of an economist Prime Minister.

"The inflation is rising again not only in double digits; the food inflation is more than 18 percent. This is unheard of. This really is a real danger for the common man and this is betrayal of the common man by the Congress. Their economic policies have led the country to this spiral of inflation and they are clueless. It is the worst failure of the economist Prime Minister," BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.

"The poor feels betrayed. People will give punishment to the Congress for this inflation," he added.

An official data released yesterday showed that inflation accelerated to a seven-month high in September driven by sharp spikes in onion and vegetable prices.

The wholesale price index rose to an annual 6.46 percent in September, which is higher than the previous month's 6.10 percent.

Overall food inflation hovered around the 18 percent mark in September keeping up the pressure as supply pressures continued. Food prices have remained high upsetting the budget of common man across the nation.
