Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Umesh Verma joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday, saying the Arvind Kejriwal-led party has fulfilled the promises it had made to the people.

"Whatever AAP says for the poor they keep their promise. I have seen when I was in the BJP that the AAP government worked for reducing rates of electricity and water in their 49 days of rule. And today, they are saying that wherever there are huts they will either make houses there or relocate the huts but will not keep the people homeless like it has happened earlier," said Verma.

Criticizing the Government for destroying thousands of huts in the capital's Wazirpur industrial area earlier on Tuesday by running a bulldozer over them, Verma said they have gone against their promise of building houses in place of huts.

"They are running bulldozers on huts, on one hand they say where there is hut there is a house but on the other hand they run bulldozers on them," said Verma.

"On August 4, 2013 when we had organized a workers' gathering in Talkatora Stadium over huts, there were 10000 people whom we had assured just before the elections, that we will make houses in place of their huts, but nothing as such happened," he added.

Recalling earlier such incidents of destroying the slums, Verma said, "On September 2, the bulldozer was run in Okhla, on November 27 in Raknpuri, Mahipalpur and now recently on December 16 over the old huts in Wazirpur industrial area. So now we think that all that was only an announcement as no action is being taken upon it."

He also criticized the state party president for not assuring him anything in this regard and neither making any effort to hold an investigation into the matter.

He further informed that there are 10 important people with him.
