Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Katiyar was detained on Monday by the Uttar Pradesh police on his way to violence-hit Fatehpur.
Violence broke out last week in Fatehpur on Makar Sankranti during a procession by VHP workers.
Following his detention, he was taken to the circuit house in Kanpur.
More than 30 people were injured in a clash that broke out in Jahanabad town, 35km from Kanpur and in Fatehpur district of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.
