The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reportedly suspended Gulab Singh Kirar, who was a part of a panel that represented the backward classes in Madhya Pradesh.

Television reports said that the suspension was effected a day after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had filed an FIR against him in conection with the Vyapam scam.

Kirar was a member of the Madhya Pradesh Backward Class and Minority Welfare Commission, and had last attended a meeting of the commission more than six months ago, the Indian Express reports.

The paper quoted the Chairman of the Commission, Mahadev Varma, as saying earlier that state government will take a call on Kirar's membership.

Before his suspension, Kirar enjoyed the rank of a minister of state.

He was also named an accused by the SIT, Gwalior, a year ago in the same case.
