The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday termed the passing away of a rape victim in Ludhiana as 'extremely disconcerting', urging the state administration and the police to take stringent action and ensure conviction of the perpetrators.

The party was reacting to the succumbing to injuries of the victim on Tuesday, after she was set on fire by the accused earlier this month.

"This incident of rape from Punjab is extremely disconcerting. I hope the state administration takes stringent action and ensure conviction of all such culprits," BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao told ANI here.

Narasimha Rao further appealed to the media to highlight the consequences of such crimes so that it serves as a deterrent.

"I appeal to the media to cover the incidents after they have happened and the manner in which people have been sentenced to jail, because unless people know the consequences of the crime, it is not possible to contain it," he added.

The 17-year-old victim, who hailed from the Dhandari Kalan region of Ludhiana, succumbed to burn injuries after her alleged rapists reportedly set her on fire last week for filing a complaint against them with the police.
