The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday welcomed the Supreme Court's directive to stay Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's circular to prevent the media from publishing 'defamatory news' against the city government.

"It is very welcome step by the Supreme Court, where the Supreme Court has stayed the circular issued by Arvind Kejriwal to curb the rights of the media and people who would be rightly criticising the government," BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra told ANI.

"It is aptly clear now that the Delhi Government and Kejriwal have acted in a very dictatorial way to formulate this draconian circular, which today has been stayed by the Supreme Court," he added.

Earlier in the day, the apex court stayed Kejriwal's circular against the media over the publication of 'defamatory' news against the Delhi government. The court also questioned Kejriwal's stand on the issue and gave him six weeks to respond.

This was in response to Kejriwal urging officials working with the Delhi Government to lodge complaints against 'defamatory' news items which 'damage the reputation' of the government with the Principal Secretary of the home department.
