Sumitra Mahajan's unanimous election today as the new speaker of the Lok Sabha, succeeding Meira Kumar was celebrated by BJP workers with drum beats and trumpets in Bhopal.
Calling it a historic moment, Monu Goel from BJP said, "Although the BJP Yuva Morcha is celebrating everywhere but in Bhopal we have gathered near the assembly to congratulate her as it's a very proud moment for them that a woman from their state who had already been the member of Parliament from the Indore constituency eight times has today become the speaker of Lok Sabha."
Not only the party workers but the Prime Minister also congratulated Mahajan.
"Congratulations to Sumitra Mahajanji on being unanimously elected Lok Sabha speaker. Her election is a proud moment for our democracy. I have known Sumitra ji for years and have seen her dedication and monumental service towards people, be it as a MP or as a Union Minister. I wish Sumitra ji the very best in her role as Speaker and assure our complete support and cooperation in the smooth running of the House," said PM, Narendra Modi.
Thanking all the parties for their cooperation, Union Minister of Urban Development, Venkaiah Naidu, expressed confidence over Mahajan's leadership and said that "I am confident that under her leadership the parliament will reach the expectations of people and maintain high standards."

Demanding unity amongst the members of the house he added, "As far as the government is concerned I can assure to the entire country particularly the members of parliament that our government is prepared to discuss any issue, every issue. I only seek cooperation from all the members of the house to see that we all come together to take up the people's problems and issues on priority basis."
Modi had earlier proposed Mahajan's name for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker.Mahajan, who has been representing Indore since 1989, is also the longest serving woman parliamentarian.
Before Mahajan's election, former union minister Kamal Nath had been functioning as the Protem Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
