The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Tuesday alleged the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had used the promise of bringing back black money merely as an election campaign tool.
"The then chief campaigner of BJP, now the Prime Minister, had said about 170 times during his election campaign that he will bring back the black money in 100 days. This is the point, they only used this broken promise as an election campaign, on the ground nothing has happened," TMC spokesperson Derek O'Brien said.
O'Brien further accused BJP of putting political pressure on the TMC government in West Bengal.
"Their great advertising campaign and 'tamasha' didn't work in three states, it didn't work in Bengal, didn't work in Odisha and didn't work in Tamil Nadu, so what do they do? The advertising hasn't worked so let us try our second strategy, put political vendetta pressure. Nothing is going to happen, in Bengal people trust Mamta di," he added.
Earlier today, the issue of black money created uproar in the Lok Sabha on the first working day of Winter Session today with the opposition parties asking the Centre to fulfill its promise of bringing it back from abroad.
As soon as the House met for the day, members from Trinamool Congress rushed to the Well holding black umbrellas with slogans like 'bring back black money' painted on them.
They were soon joined by members from the Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Samajwadi Party and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) who also raised slogans demanding a response from the government as to when the black money will be brought back.
