A report has said that a new fleet of three aircraft based on Boeing 747-8 will serve as the next Air Force One.

The 747-8 is the latest variant of the iconic jumbo jet that dates back to the 1960s. The new aircraft has new wings and engines, an extended fuselage and is more fuel efficient and technologically advanced, reported The Verge.

The aircraft has been around since 2005 but has seen limited traction with airlines owing to consistent rise in fuel prices over the last several years, limited interest in ultra-high-capacity long-haul routes, and competition from Airbus' A380.

The airliner that currently ferries the President of the United States across the world is a Boeing VC-25, a military variant of the 747-200 which was built in 1991, the report said.
