Militant Islamists in Nigeria have reportedly taken control of the key town of Damboa in north-eastern part of the country.

A local vigilante leader has told the BBC that the vigilante force defending the town fled on Sunday, and Islamist group Boko Haram's black flag is now flying over Damboa.

The leader revealed that at least 40 people were killed during Friday's attack on Damboa that was led by the notorious terror group Boko Haram.

Boko Haram triggered international outrage after it recently abducted more than 200 schoolgirls in Chibok.
