Bollywood veterans on Sunday lauded the conferring of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award upon legendary actor and filmmaker Shashi Kapoor.

"Really happy that Shashi ji got the Dada Saheb Phalke award. He should have got it earlier, but glad that he has been conferred with this award," said veteran actress Waheeda Rehman.

"His contribution, his performances, his work for new age cinema, the kind of films that he produced, is wonderful and I think worthy of this award," added senior actor Anupam Kher.

Actor-turned-politician Raj Babbar and actress Divya Dutta were also among those who extolled Kapoor's contribution towards cinema and theatre.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley today conferred Kapoor with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in a star studded event at Prithvi Theatre in Mumbai, which was set up by the legendary actor in memory of his father and actor Prithviraj Kapoor.

The 77-year-old is the 46th winner of the honour that is awarded for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of cinema.

He is known for his myriad roles in both mainstream and experimental cinema in India and in several international projects, most notably for his collaboration with Ismail Merchant and James Ivory, who directed him in films like 'The Householder' and 'Heat and Dust'.
