Former Australian Test cricketer Craig McDermott reportedly wants to rejoin his former side's coaching set-up, which may boost captain Michael Clarke's hopes of regaining the Ashes urn in the return series.

McDermott quit as national bowling coach in May last year citing personal reasons despite a spectacular, swing-based resurrection of Australia's Test attack and was succeeded by former Australian paceman Ali de Winter.

According to news.com.au, however, said that the appointment of former Test batsman Darren Lehmann as Mickey Arthur's successor as coach cleared any doubts in the mind of the 71-Test, 291-wicket paceman's re-engagement, who revealed that he coveted a return back to Australia's coaching fold.

Stating that he is still working at the Centre of Excellence, McDermott said that he would welcome with open arms any call coming from the CA about a possible mentorship as he enjoyed being with the team with their high calibre of players.

The bowling guru, who returned from an under-19 World Cup scouting mission this month in India with former Test skipper Greg Chappell, said that he wants to help as losing three of Australia's best young fast bowlers, Mitchell Starc, James Pattinson and Pat Cummins, to stress fractures repeatedly is affecting the team.

A CA statement called McDermott as an exception to the rule that young paceman can be durable given that he played 24 Tests for 80 wickets by the age of 23, and McDermott said that he bowled about 3700 balls in his first summer and that the great fast bowlers keeps on bowling.

Meanwhile, McDermott also said that brilliant but fragile Ashes spearhead Ryan Harris would need quality back-up in the return Ashes showdown with England and warned that Australia's injury woes meant left-armer Mitchell Johnson would become pivotal.

McDermott also called on Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle to rediscover the magic that whitewashed India 4-0 in Australia two years ago.
