Reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) champion Vitali Klitschko is reportedly keen to run for the role of president of his country Ukraine, vowing to modernise the country and improve the lives of ordinary Ukrainians.

According to the Guardian, Klitschko, who is the first heavyweight champion to hold a PhD, had won a seat in the Ukrainian parliament last year after promising to shake up the political establishment.

According to the WBC, Klitschko, who is one of Ukraine's most popular MPs with a reformist agenda and a stellar sporting career behind him, said that he would run for president in 2015, although his office is yet to confirm the statement.

However, Klitschko had said that even though many people want to be the President, it is no more than a wish for them if they do not have the support of the people.

Since his election to the parliament, Klitschko has campaigned against what he calls authoritarian moves by President Viktor Yanukovych, such as the jailing of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.
