The English media has projected that it believes the national cricket team's days of glory are now behind them, according to reports.

According to Fox Sports, former cricketer Geoffrey Boycott wrote that the more he looks at England, the more they remind him of Manchester United, a team on the way down and not on the way up.

Pessimism was the tone du jour in the UK press after England lost their final four wickets on Monday to ensure Australia a 218-run victory, the report said.

Another former England representative, Derek Pringle, noted the tourists were unlikely to launch a counter-offensive in Perth, given they've won just a solitary Test at the venue, the report added.

Stuart Broad's dismissal on Monday also attracted criticism and Alastair Cook's struggles with the bat this series were also highlighted, the report further said.

Mike Selvey, writing in The Guardian, noted the historical significance of Cook's scores of three and one at the Adelaide Oval, the report mentioned.
