ANI Rio de Janeiro [Brazil]

Brazilian President Michel Temer was hospitalised on Wednesday, with urological problems, amidst a congressional debate over whether he should face a criminal trial for allegedly discussing bribes with a businessman.

"President Temer felt discomfort in the late morning," the presidency's statement said. "The duty doctor diagnosed a urological obstruction and recommended that he be examined at the Military Hospital."

Several hours later he was hospitalised, the presidency said.

According to local media reports, the news added a note of drama to a day that had been widely seen as likely to go smoothly for Temer.

Temer is the first president in Brazil to face criminal charges while in office. However, he denied all the accusations.
