A new study has revealed that it leads to better satisfaction when patient's own tissues are used for reconstruction of breast than implants for women who have undergone mastectomy.

The study done by Wolters Kluwer Health examined patient satisfaction and quality of life after breast reconstruction and found that women who choose reconstruction with their own tissues were more satisfied with the results.

The studies performed earlier have reported conflicting results, but the newly performed study suggested higher patient satisfaction rates for women undergoing reconstruction using their own tissues.

Researchers also found that younger women undergoing immediate implant reconstruction had higher expectations, compared to women who waited several months for delayed autologous reconstruction.

Dr. Yassir Eltahir, plastic surgeon at University Medical Center Groningen concluded that the study didn't find any ideal breast reconstruction suitable for all patients.

The study is published in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
