Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Brinda Karat on Tuesday condemned West Bengal Advocate-General Bimal Chatterjee's 'insulting' remarks in the Calcutta High Court that the State Election Commission's demands were like those of a beautiful lady for, and demanded a public apology from him.
"I condemn such a statement which is so clearly sexist and offensive. And if the Advocate-General of a state, who is supposed to have logic and reasoning in putting forward legal arguments, has none of those qualities and then tries to get the better (of) his opponents by making sexist comments; it just shows how poor standards there are," Karat told Asian News International (ANI) here.
"It's shocking and highly condemnable. He should certainly publicly apologise and withdraw the comments," she added.
The West Bengal Congress has also demanded Chatterjee's apology over his insulting and uncalled for remark.
The West Bengal Advocate-General had made the remarks during the hearing on a legal battle between the State Election Commission and West Bengal Government on matters relating to the holding of panchayat polls.
