Renowned lyricist and Rajya Sabha lawmaker Javed Akhtar on Thursday said a fair trial is given to every convict and added that the broadcast of Nirbhaya documentary cannot harm the nation's pride.

"Be it a terrorist, murderer or a rapist, we give a fair trial to everyone. We should be proud of this. Whatever this person is saying in his interview, will bring out the how such people think. It, in turn, will generate more hatred for them and not love. I don't think there will be any loss to nation's pride by the broadcast of this documentary," said Akhtar.

"I have not seen what is there in that documentary. But I have also learnt that most of the people who are talking about it have also not seen it. The documentary was aired last night and the fight in the Parliament and outside has been going on even before that," he added.

He further said that every person who was saying 'yes or no' with regard to this matter has not yet seen the documentary.

"I don't understand if it has anything related to the nation's insult. Our police have so efficiently caught them, the judiciary has sent them to jail and they have been held guilty. Ours is a civilised country, we have a Constitution and there is a way that we give a fair chance to the criminal to put forward his viewpoint," he added.

India's Daughter', the documentary based on the 2012 Delhi gang-rape, has been aired by the BBC despite the government's embargo on the same.

The Union Home Ministry had earlier on Wednesday asked the media not to broadcast the documentary.

A Delhi court had also restrained the media from publishing, broadcasting, telecasting or uploading the interview on the internet.

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry had also issued a media advisory on the issue.
