Trading at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) closed 550.93 points down to stand at 27,561.38 today.
At the National Stock Exchange (Nifty), it closed 160.55 points down to stand at 8,361.00.
Tata Elxsi Ltd., and Sun TV Network Ltd., Atul Ltd. and Persistent Systems Ltd. registered increases of 5.10, 4.61, 4.15 and 4.02 percent respectively in Group A.
The top losers in Group A were Kailash Auto Finance Ltd., Jaiprakash Power Ventures Limited, Jaypee Infratech Ltd. and Indian Overseas Bank, registering decreases of 9.86, 7.41, 7.19 and 6.05 percent respectively at the close of trading.
The auto sector ended 363.16 points down at 18,590.32, while the banking sector was down 487.06 points at 20,887.08.
The realty sector was down 28.91 points at 1,323.33.
Indian currency, however, went up 0.16 percent at Rs 64.14 per dollar.
