The Border Security Force (BSF) has recovered a huge cache of heroin and ammunition at Indo-Pak border in Punjab on Wednesday, once again thwarting attempts of smugglers to smuggle contraband drugs and arms.

Forces said suspected movement was noted at line of control and some gunshots were fired by the smugglers crossing over to which the BSF retaliated and gunned down one of the intruders.

"Our personnel observed movement of five smugglers from Pakistan side and we stalked their movement. Two came near the fence and they were trying to clear the contraband with a pipe;, our personnel challenged them and we have fired in retaliation that killed one smuggler," said Deputy Inspector General, Sector BSF in Amritsar, M F Farooqui.

Farooqui also said that a flag meeting was conducted with Pakistani forces for future course of action.

"We had a flag meeting with Pakistan this morning and we have informed that a suspected smuggler has suffered injury and he has crawled to cross through the border," he added.

Tactical operations are being mounted to foil the attempts of smugglers during harvesting season.

The troops have been put on high alert as inputs were received regarding threat of smuggling from the area of Border outpost of Rajatal.

BSF troops were deployed in the area after suspicious movement of 4-5 smugglers was observed and three smugglers crossed into Pakistan.

The smugglers retreated hastily taking cover of darkness following a gun battle between the smugglers and the BSF personnel.

Among the items recovered, contraband heroin, pistol magazine, ammunition along with a SIM card and mobile phone.
