A senior police officer on Monday said burglars have robbed a bank in Sonipat after digging a tunnel beneath it to reach the place.
Robbers broke into the locker room of a branch of state run Punjab National Bank by digging a 100 feet long tunnel from a nearby unoccupied decaying house.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajiv Deshwal said the teams had been formed to investigate the crime after registering the First Information Report (FIR).
"There was a pit on the floor. When we followed it, we discovered a 100-feet long tunnel. They came through it and ransacked some of the lockers. The bank manager has complained to us. We have registered a FIR and have launched investigation," said Deshwal.
Meanwhile, the manager of the bank Devendra Malik refused to give estimate of loss and said, "We can't say anything about the extent of loss. Nearly 85-86 lockers have been broken."
Some of the bank customers were inconsolable, as they lost their precious ornaments and gems.
