Uber Taxi Service issued a fresh statement on Monday assuring its full co-operation to bring the company's driver arrested for allegedly raping a woman to justice and help the victim and her family in their recovery.
"Will do everything, to help bring this perpetrator to justice and to support the victim and her family in her recovery," the statement from Uber said.
"Will work with Government to establish clear background checks currently absent in their commercial transportation licensing programs," it added.
Earlier in a previous statement released by the company, Uber spokeswoman Evelyn Tay had said: "Our thoughts are with the victim of this terrible crime and we are working with the police as they investigate. We will assist them in any way we can. It is also our policy to immediately suspend a driver's account following allegations of a serious incident, which we have done."
The victim was raped by an Uber cab driver earlier on Friday when she hired the taxi to go back to her home in Northwest Delhi, leading to outrage and fear about the safety of women in cabs.
The accused driver, who was arrested yesterday in Mathura, has now been revealed as a repeat offender. According to reports, he was imprisoned in the Tihar jail for 10 months while being tried for allegedly raping a 22-year-old employee of a Gurgaon pub.
