The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday gave its approval for the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on renewable energy cooperation between India and Seychelles.

According to reports, the MoU aims to strengthen, promote and develop renewable energy cooperation between the two countries on the basis of equality and mutual benefit.

The MoU will also help in strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Relations between India and Seychelles have been characterized by close cooperation and understanding. An Indian naval ship, the INS Tarasa, was gifted to Seychelles in 2014 to augment surveillance and patrolling capacity of Seychelles waters. Several Indian ships have since made port calls in Victoria.

Prime Minister Modi travelled to Seychelles in March this year, stating that India considers the island nation as a trusted neighbour and strategic partner.
