The Union Cabinet has banned the conversion of government bungalows into memorials.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi last evening.
The decision comes nearly a month after Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief and former union minister Ajit Singh and his supporters demanded that government convert his official bungalow into a memorial in honour of his father and late prime minister Chaudhary Charan Singh.
In the last week of September, Singh had called a 'Mahapanchayat' with his supporters in New Delhi at his then 12, Tughlaq Road residence to chalk out a strategy about converting his government bungalow into a memorial for his father.
The police had then declared the 'Mahapanchayat' illegal, and taken steps to tighten security around the area.

The controversy over converting Singh's bungalow into a memorial started after New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) issued a notice to him to vacate his official bungalow, in which he had been staying for the past 36 years after Choudhary Charan Singh's death.
The government had then ordered the disconnection of water and power supply to his residence when he refused to vacate the premises.
Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu had then criticized the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Ajit Singh for politicising the issue.
"We have been in power for just three months, before Ajit Singh was a Union Minister himself. Today those who are giving us advice, they have ruled the country for almost 50 years, and also for the last ten years. During this time, they never took interest in this issue, nor did they do anything," Naidu told media persons then.
"It has been 37 years since Chaudhary Charan Singh passed away. It is wrong to make politically charged statements at our government now, which has been in power just for three months. Nobody would accept doing this in the name of Chaudhary Charan Singh ," he added.
Ajit Singh has reportedly now shifted to a three-bedroom house in South Delhi.
