The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday gave its approval for the fifth phase of the Unique Identification (UID) scheme.
In this phase, the scheme will undertake enrolments in the four states, namely Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand. In addition to this, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has been given the target of generation of 100 crore aadhaar numbers by 2015.
The UIDAI was established in 2009 with a mandate to generate and assign UID numbers to residents of India. Currently, more than 67.38 crore aadhaar numbers have been generated by the UIDAI.
